Very diverse and rich Zadar archipelagus is arranged in front of the Zadar coastland in three rows. In the front row, relative to the coastland, are the islands of Ugljan and Pasman. The whole of Ugljan but especially the settlement of Preko, located directly opposite to Zadar, are a kind of city outskirts, places directly gravitating to their domicile city and very intensively connected by ferry boats. Chief occupations are farming, growing of vines and olives, fishing and tourism. Preko is connected with all the locations on the island by the regional road.

Preko developed around two coves and the coast around Preko, partly under the forests, offers attractive bathing possibilities. In front of Preko are the islets of Osljak and Galovac. The most attractive location for tourists is a beach on the wooded island of Galovac, only 80 m from the centre of Preko. Preko has a long tradition in tourism and in terms of tourism, Preko comprises the surrounding villages of Sutomiscica, Poljana and Osljak on the island of the same name. Preko has a number of very good restaurants. Numerous folklore and entertainment programs are organized during the tourist season, the most popular being the so-called Prijeska Legrica, a traditional folk feast.

There is the Romanesque church of St. John the Baptist dating back to the 12th century in the village. The Baroque parish church from the 18th century has an altarpiece by Franjo Salghetti-Drioli. On the hill above the town is the large mediaeval fortress of St. Michael from the 13th century, erected by the Venetians around the former Benedictine monastery and church. The fortress offers a nice view on the group of islands in front of Zadar
