Split is a city and a port in the central Dalmatia, its metropolis and industrial, universital, economic and admministrative centre. You can reach it by taking the highway Zagreb-Split, or an aeroplane or a ship. Split has the Mediterranean climate: hot dry summers and mild and humid winters. Split is one of the sunniest places in Europe. Vegetation is of the evergreen Mediterranean type, and subtropical flora (palm-trees, agaves, cacti) grows in the city and its surroundings.

On this very favourable location, in the south bay of the Split's peninsula, the roman emperor Diocletian nad build his luxurious villa, which presents at the same time well.protected military fortress. It is the object of the rectangular shape with the fortifications in the corners and well-preserved front part. You enter it by four doors (gold, silver, ferrum, and bronz). Next to the Gold door is the monumental monument to Gregurius from Nona, work by the sculptur Ivan Mestrovic, from 1929.

After the death of Diocletian its fabulous mausoleum becomes the cathedral of San Doimo. At the beginning of the century the church bell has been raised next to it, one of the simbols of Split today. In the 1979. the palace and the old historical part of Split, according to the international conventions inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List being one of the most preserved examples of the classic antic palace and the key model of the studies of the architecture of the type.

Historical and art monuments are mostly situated in the historical centre of Split. The central square, Peristil was the centre of the public life in the Palace. Here distinguishes by its beauty the palace of Grisogono-Cipci, inserted in the west collonade of Peristil. Some other palaces stand out for its beauty and artistic value as the palace Cindro, nice example of the baroque architecture and Papalic palace, late gotical complex (with the Civil museum inside).

The west door opens to the city square, named the Folk's square (with the Etnographic museum on). South of it, very close to the coast is Vocni trg where dominates the remains of the city fortress from Venetians build in 1435, as their garrison.The Milesi palace in the Baroque style stands on the north part of the square, with the bronze monument to the father of the croatian literature Marko Marulic, work by the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.

The space in front of the front part of the Palace developed into the city promenade which thanks to its features and the architecture represents a breath-taking view over the city and is without doubts one of the most beautifull promenades on the Adriatic coast. On the west it finishes with the representative Reppublic Square in Neorenneissance style. On its west side there is the Marmont street, today the city promenade.

The Marjan peninsula with the omonimus hill Marjan Forest Park, the green oasis. The citizens of Split have been proud of it for generations, and it is carefully maintained and cherished. The Marjan stairway, running along the crest of the hill, leads to another, higher top of Marjan, Telegrin, with a vista point offering prospect on the Split peninsula, Kozjak, Mosor, the Kastela Gulf, Salona and Klis, Trogir and Ciovo, and the islands of Solta, Brac, Hvar and Vis. On the north side of Marjan there is the and is considered one of favourites places of its citizens. On its south slopes there is the Museum of Croatian Archaelogical Monuments, with one of the most precious collections from the Middle Ages in Europe. In its vicinity is the Mestrovic Gallery, the present of the famous croatian sculptor with his best works.

On the north side of Marjan there is the locality Poljud with a very important Franciscan Monastery and very close to the sports complex is the church of St. Trinity. On the road from Poljud to the centre is the Archaelogical Museum, founded in 1820. the oldest museum institition in this part of Europe.

The cultural and entertainment offer of Split is extremely rich, particularly in the summer, when the city squares, yards and other areas turn into a large open-air stage. The Split Summer, a traditional festival in the middle of the summer season, includes dramas, operas and concerts (from mid-July to mid-August). The Day of St. Doimus (Duje), who is the patron saint of the city, is commemorated on the 7th of May. Recently, the nautical and subaquatical tourism developes unbelievably fast thanks to Split's numerous marinas.

You choose Split because of its smell of the palace stone, its smell of broom and sea, or to experience the rich cultural life of the city and recently because of the great tourist offer.
