Umag, a small town and port on the northwestern coast of Istria, presents the "Croatian door to Europe". Umag today is a city of tourism and sport. It is especially known as the Istrian sports center, being the host of ATP tournament which attracts numerous top stars of tennis.
It was discovered by the Roman nobles still in ancient times, who decided to appropriate it as their summer residence. Its luster, splendor and glamor of those times still reflect on the many Venetian houses in the old part of Umag.
Situated only 40 km from Trieste, 150 from Ljubljana and 50 nautical miles from Venice, it is a favorite vacation destination for many tourists, being a place with a remarkable excursion possibilities. Hinterland of Umag is also hiding so far little-known tourist attractions such as hiking, speleology and other activities for adventure enthusiasts. The old town of Umag is located on a small peninsula, while a new one stretches mainly along the coast, where its major tourist facilities are situated.
Beside Umag two other tourist destinations are well known: Savudrija with its oldest brick lighthouse on the Croatian Adriatic and Lovrečica as a peaceful oasis for family vacations. Umag is one of the most prestigious ACI marina with blue flag. Tourist mini train connects Umag with Kator, where a Roman archeological site is situated.
