Bol is an exclusive seaside resort on the southern side of the island of Brac, one of the sunniest croatian islands. This is the only inhabitated place on its southern side and the oldest town on the coast of Brac. Without doubt there was a roman settlement here and the name of the place originates from the Latin word vallum: an earth fortification with palisades.
The sacophagi with the crucifixes engraved from the late Cristian period were found here, and the Preromanesque church of St. John Tudor with the remains of the late antique period found on its fondaments. Within the paleocristian and Medieval monuments we register the dominican monastery of Our Lady of Mercy. Next to the convent there is a museum with many art preciousnesses, numismatic collections, manuscripts and incunabuli e similar works of art. Above the port of Bol you can see numerous summer residences, buildings from the late Gothic to the Baroque period. There is “Branko Deskovic gallery” in one of those Baroque palaces, with the permanent exposition of croatian modern art.
Large pebble and sand beaches spread for more than ten chilometers which together with the sources of drinking water have made this place an oasis of the tourism already long time ago. Today the place is renomated for its great number of turists coming every year. The location which symbilizes the place is the wide beach of Golden Cape (Zlatni rat), one of the most beautiful Adriatic beaches and the reason of proudness of its inhabitants. This cape of the long form, covered with million of the small sand grains, emerge in the cristal blu sea with its all longitude and changes its form according to the sea currents. It is the real paradise for those who like surf and other water sports.
Above Bol there is the sheer mountain ridge of Bolska kruna (The Crown of Bol) with remains of the Illyrian fortress Kostilo (660 m) and Vidova gora (The Vidova Mountain, 778 m) is the highest peak of the Adriatic islands.
